St Francis Museum Complex and Museum of the Olive Tree Civilisation
The complex houses the San Francesco Art Collection, where you can admire paintings from the Spoleto school of the 14th century, Pintoriccchio, Spagna, Turchi, and archaeological findings from the Longobard necropolis of Pietrarossa on display in the Antiquarium.
Also within the complex is the Museo dell’olio e dell’ulivo (Museum of Oil and the Olive Tree), about the culture of oil and olive cultivation. It is a museum focusing on the microcosm of olive cultivation and oil production in the Trevi area and within the Mediterranean environment. Oil is not only a product of excellence of the Trevi area, but its cultivation is something rooted in the Umbrian territory, becoming part of the history and traditions of its people. The itinerary opens with the story of a local grower who, with the help of dialectal expressions, accompanies the visitor through the cycle of olive cultivation, oil production and conservation, providing information on processing and extraction techniques, rituals, superstitions and typically local religious beliefs.
The complex includes the Church of San Francesco, located on top of an older sacred building dating back to 1268 and dedicated to Mary. The walls of the apse feature frescoes from the first half of the 14th century depicting the Stories of the Life of the Virgin Mary. The early 14th century iconostasis cross by the Maestro di Trevi is of great value, as is the monumental organ built by the master Paolo Pietro di Paolo di Montefalco in 1509, a “very rare surviving example of the type that was defined as a wall organ in the Renaissance”.
