The Gaite Market

Summer in Bevagna

The surprising re-enactment of medieval daily life, which takes place every year in the historic center of Bevagna in the month of June.

The four Gaite of San Giorgio, San Giovanni, Santa Maria and San Pietro compete in four races, while the village comes alive with the colorful society of the time. Born in the 1980s as the “Porchetta Festival”, the event, thanks to the intuition of the first Bevanati volunteers, was immediately characterized by great attention to detail and historical research. The name “guaita or gaita” derives from the Lombard watha, or “guard”, a term used to indicate the four neighborhoods into which Bevagna and the surrounding territory were divided. The event experiences its most significant moment during the days of the Market, which takes place within the four neighbourhoods. The streets are filled with stalls and come alive with the noise of the shops in which the visitor can find fabrics, leather objects, wicker, ropes, paper, wrought iron, copper, handmade candles and even cheese, fish, freshly baked bread and focaccias . To complete the Market, the creation of some medieval crafts was conceived, according to ancient processing and production techniques: the wax factory, the paper mill, the painter and the silk factory.

The shops are open for the entire week, helping to create that atmosphere of fervor that will culminate in the days of the Market, but with them a tourist circuit of visits has been created that can be visited all year round.
