Madonna del Fosco Sanctuary
The Virgin put her hand on the child’s head and left a sign on him. The plague disappeared and on the apparition site, people built a small aedicule, which became a chapel around 1450 and then a church in 1600. People’s devotion was increasing, so they needed a church, which was enlarged in 1811 and then restored in 1837. The sanctuary was still insufficient and in 1854 the bishop of Spoleto, Arnaldi, placed the first stone of the current church, which was inaugurated on the 8th October 1860. The church has three naves; the interior houses the original fresco, which has recently been restored and shows the standing Virgin placing her hands on the head of a kneeling child on the right and an angel holding a lily on the left. The fresco is enclosed in a very rich altar, donated by Decio Ancaiani of Spoleto. A lot of pilgrims from Giano and nearby towns come here on Sundays in May.
