Sagra del Sedano Nero e della Salsiccia
The Market Exhibition of Black Celery and the Festival of Black Celery and Sausage in Trevi take place every year on the third weekend of October, serving as the highlight of the Ottobre Trevano 2023 celebrations.
This event honors the unique Black Celery cultivar, an exceptional product of the region that grows exclusively in the “Canapine” area. Recognized as a Slow Food Presidia, this prized celery is a source of pride for the entire town. The festival takes place in the town’s main square, which is transformed with wooden crates, bunches of celery with bright white stalks and lush green leaves, and the presence of “Sedanari” (celery growers) preparing for the competition. Each grower presents their finest specimens, competing for the coveted first prize.
What makes this vegetable truly unique is its limited production area and the labor-intensive process required for cultivation. Autumn, with its first chills, has long been the traditional season for pig slaughtering and the production of delicious sausages and “mazzafegati” (a local delicacy). Thus, on the same Sunday, the town square also hosts local butchers showcasing their freshly crafted specialties.
Visitors can savor raw celery with “pinzimonio” (a mix of olive oil, salt, and pepper for dipping), alongside flavorful sausages freshly grilled over open flames—a true celebration of Trevi’s culinary and agricultural traditions.
