Pilgrimage to the Madonna del Fosco
On the first Sunday of May, every two years, the people of Masse and their families have, for many decades, used to go in procession to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Fosco in the Castagnola di Giano area of Umbria, about 17 kilometers from Massa Martana .
The circumstance has always called together a multitude of people from Masse, including many of them now resident in other municipalities and who, with statues on their shoulders and defying all weather conditions, have repeated and will continue to repeat this penitential pilgrimage, which began after the epidemic consequences that their ancestors suffered due to and immediately after the not exactly exciting episode of “intolerance” that occurred in Massa towards the end of the 18th century towards a certain Father Leopoldo da Gaiche, a Franciscan preacher on a mission in the Massa area.
