St. Clare of the Cross Sanctuary
The Blessed Giovanna, in 1281, began the building of the Monastery, where her sister St. Clare became Abbess in 1291, following the Rule of St. Augustine. It was her who ordered the rebuilding of the church, which is called like her, and where she was buried.
All that is left of this Church (1303) is the nuns’ choir, the current St. Cross chapel, frescoed in 1333, representing the main events of Clare’s life from her early vocation as a child to the climax of her spiritual journey by meeting Christ the pilgrim who put the cross in her breast, to the last scene of her death. A new church, designed by Valentino Martelli, was built in 1430. The church has a strong and classical elegance. The impressive interior has three naves and ruins of earlier buildings. There is a magnificent 17th-century golden ciborium on the main altar. On the right, on a 14th-century base, there is a silver and crystal urn containing the immaculate body of St. Clare.
