The Church of St. Mary di Agello in Grutti
The Church of St. Mary in Agello is situated on a hill close to the village of Grutti; the small votive building is built on the ruins of a primitive abbey and its structure, made of squared travertine stone, is inspired by the classic Romanesque model of Umbrian churches.
The name derives from the Latin word agellus (little farm) since it seems that the local farmers worshipped the Virgin Mary here as the defender of the fields. The double-gabled facade has a round-arched gate, next to which there is a small window on the right surmounted by a large oculus and a small bell gable from the 16th century; the semi-circular apse has a Romanesque style. The interior is completely restored with a pitched roof supported by trusses and shows a fresco in the apse representing Virgin Mary and baby Jesus enthroned between Saints Peter and Paul, and God giving his blessing in the dome. On the church sides, there are ruins of what must have been the nearby monastery.
