Parochial church of St. Gregorio in Nido

Outside the residential area, on the way to Colle del Marchese, you will find the parochial church of San Gregorio in Nido, a Romanesque building dating back to around 1141, with splendid bas-relief decorations on the façade and on the portal with recessed arches, with a ring of plant motifs intertwined with fantastic figures.

The parish church of Castel Ritaldi, dedicated to St. Gregory, rises just outside the inhabited centre in the open countryside. The most interesting features are on the façade. In the upper part of the portal there was a rose window, now removed from the bell tower. In the centre of the rose window was the Agnus Dei and around it the inscription: Animalia sanctorum quattuor hunc agnum clangunt (The animals of the four saints acclaim this lamb). On the sides of the rose window are the symbols of the four evangelists: the ox symbol of St. Luke, the lion symbol of St. Mark, the eagle symbol of St. John and the angel of St. Matthew.
Inside the parish church there is a small sculptural fragment walled in on the right wall with three virile faces, a fragment of a 4th century sarcophagus and two Roman epigraphs: one acts as a step at the baptismal font, the other as an altar table. The parish church was the parish of Castel Ritaldi until 1818.
