Castle from 1360 with towers and walls

Castel Ritaldi was probably founded as a Roman pagus and it takes its name from the Ritaldi castle.

In the 11th century, a viscount used to reside here with administrative powers over its territory, which included numerous castles, some of which are still inhabited and others are currently partially in ruins. Together with Colle del Marchese, it was part of a territory called “Normandia”, a small autonomous province within the territories of the Church. Towards the end of the 12th century, the castle was destroyed during the wars between the imperial and papal powers, but by the beginning of the 13th century it had been completely rebuilt. In the second half of the 14th century, the Castle was fortified with strong walls, those that still remain almost intact, with external towers, embrasures and bombard holes.
After the fourteenth century, the village with its narrow streets consolidated inside the high bastions. Until the 18th century, Castel Ritaldi and its territory gravitated within the orbit of the Spoleto hegemony.
