The Cammino del SOL
A journey through the hills of DOP oil, the hills of Sagrantino and the woods of the Martani Mountains
The Cammino del Sol is a ring route of over one hundred kilometers that leads to the discovery of eight fortified villages in the southern Umbrian Valley: Bevagna, Castel Ritaldi, Campello sul Clitunno, Giano dell’Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo, Massa Martana, Montefalco, and Trevi. They constitute the Union of the Municipalities of the Lands of Oil and Sagrantino! The villages await you and are ready to show their artistic and naturalistic wonders. In these places, history, traditions, art, and culture blend, giving rise to unique and suggestive landscapes and environments.
You will traverse the olive landscape of the Assisi-Spoleto strip, following the Olive Trail and the ancient Path of Francis, the wine landscape of Sagrantino with its prestigious wineries, and the wooded environment of the Monti Martani. You will enter unique environments where traces of ancient settlements emerge. You will discover art masterpieces, evidence of the illustrious artists who have stayed and worked here, such as the Perugino Divine Painter, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Spain. You will breathe the festive atmosphere of olive harvesting and grape harvesting, when the land yields the fruits of hard work at the end of a season.
You will be able to taste the genuine products of the land and many others, expertly crafted by the hands of those who have been living in these lands for years. You will breathe the atmosphere of distant epochs! The Middle Ages, with reenactments set in the narrow streets of the villages that plunge the visitor into the customs and traditions of the past; rural and peasant life, such as village festivals, symbols of the roots of the villages.
