Food and Wine, Terre dell'olio e del Sagrantino
The lands around Montefalco are generous and take care of their inhabitants and visitors, offering wonders such as the tuber melanosporum, the prized black truffle, son of holm oaks, oaks and rockroses, and the tuber aestivum, its younger brother which prefers the summer and the shade of broad-leaved trees.
But the lands on which the Sagrantino roads wind recognize above all the work of men and their age-old passion, rewarding the effort of the “brucatura”, the hand harvesting in the first days of November, with a genuine, slowly ripening product: the extra virgin olive oil from the Umbrian hills, harvested under the protection of the Umbria Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) and which in the Montefalco area and in the territories of the other four municipalities of Sagrantino, Castel Ritaldi, Giano dell’Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo and Bevagna, takes the name of Colli Martani, standing out for the sweetness given by the typical San Felice olives, which soften the sour and unmistakable taste of the Umbrian oil, due to the most widespread olives ” moraiolo”.
