Archaeological Route in Bevagna

On foot
Through the modern Porta Foligno, we go down Corso Matteotti which, along with the extension of Corso Amendola, there was the urban section of Via Flaminia and the decumanus maximus of ancient Mevania.
This leads to the crossroads of via Crescimbeni and just at the corner of via Crescimbeni and Piazza Garibaldi there are the ruins of the Roman thermal baths, where you can see parts of the calidarium and tepidarium, and above all, you can admire the beautiful black and white mosaic floor of the frigidarium (2nd century AD), decorated with tritons, octopuses, dolphins, and lobsters drawings. Following the street, you will see Palazzo Lepri, which houses the Museo Civico (Bevagna’s Civic Museum). On the first floor of the building, there is an interesting archaeological section with many Umbrian and Latin epigraphs and fragments of statues, including a huge worship male god statue. Going towards Piazza Silvestri, in Via del Gonfalone, it is possible to see some opus reticulatum rooms and barrel vaults bricks which can be identified as parts of the Clitunno river port, mentioned in ancient documents (Strabone).
