Pissignano castle

A little further down the valley, the medieval towers of the castle of Pissignano Alto (upper Pissignano) catch our attention; its name comes from the ancient Pissinianum, whose meaning is "Janus's pool", a construction, linked to water, then located near the current Temple of Clitumnus, the toponym is indisputable and is also found in a letter by Frederick Barbarossa.

We know for sure, thanks also to the findings, that the area was inhabited in Roman times, between the fifth and sixth centuries, as it was close to the Flaminian way.During the Middle Ages, the first settlement was built at the top of the hill in the 11th-12th centuries, next to a Romanesque Benedictine church. It was the Benedictine community to decide to surround the settlement with powerful walls, so much so that their presence gave the name to the settlement, called Borgo San Benedetto, and the mountain above it, known as Monte San Benedetto or (Colle Revalioso). Because of its strategic position, it was contested by various neighbouring municipalities, becoming the location of battles and shelters; it was chosen as a post and refuge by well-known figures; in fact, in 1155 Frederick Barbarossa stationed his troops near the castle after the destruction of the city of Spoleto.
The castle welcomes us with its triangular structure, typical of hillside castles, with the summit upstream and the towers arranged on the corners and on the two sloping sides in an intermediate position. The village is laid out in sloping terraces and partly retains its medieval character; at the highest point are the remains of what must have been the noble palace, where there is a fresco depicting a Madonna and Child, dated 1545. Inside the ancient church, now deconsecrated and privately owned, are frescoes dated 1449 and others depicting the Resurrection, painted by Fabio Angelucci da Mevale and dating from the second half of the 16th century.
