Morcicchia

Morcicchia Castle is isolated from the other villages and can be reached through a dirt road. It was also called Moricicla or Moricicula until 1490.

The origin of the name is unclear; the place name, according to the elders, means “castle with circular walls”, although the primitive plan of the town doesn’t have a circular shape. This was the ancient fief belonging to the Litaldi or Ritaldi, a family from Spoleto, and just like the other villages, it shared the same historical events of the territory. It became the property of Marrone di Gisliero, who probably was a Lombard or Frank lord who gave the territory as an exchange for the Church in 1078. At the end of the 12th century, Cencio Camerario defined it as “iuris beati Petri”. It belonged to Normandy and Spoleto for a while and then finally united in 1600 in Moriano adopting a municipal statute, which is nowadays housed in Spoleto Archives. It finally became the property of Giano in 1800. The ancient castle is divided into two districts: San Silvestro and Castello. There are only a few towers and houses left along with a part of its walls. This place is surrounded by silence and gives to the tourists ancient times vibes thanks to its local white and pink stone buildings, tiny alleyways, and the St. Sylvester Church (14th century). The church has a bell gable that underlines its ancient origins. The City Hall, which is partially visible on the northern side of the castle, was probably effective in the Middle Ages.
